Precautions for Using AGV mobile robot PU drive wheel

Proper usage and regular maintenance can significantly extend the service life of PU drive wheels. Pay special attention to the following points:

1. Installation – A Critical Factor for Longevity

Many wheel failures are caused by improper installation.

Always use a torque wrench. Tightening bolts by feel is strongly discouraged. Insufficient torque may cause slipping and wear, while excessive torque can damage bolts or the wheel hub. For example, the recommended torque for M8 bolts is 25–30 N·m.

Re-torque after initial run: After 48 hours of operation, re-check all bolt torques.

2. Proper Tightening Sequence

For wheels secured with multiple bolts, follow a cross-tightening pattern in 2–3 progressive steps. This prevents wheel misalignment, which can lead to uneven or eccentric wear.

3. Clean Keyways Before Installation

Remove all metal chips, dust, and oil from the keyway, and apply a small amount of grease. This helps prevent fretting wear caused by micro-movement.

4. Establish a Routine Maintenance Schedule

A periodic inspection system effectively reduces unplanned downtime.

5. Daily Inspection

Visually check the tread for embedded metal shavings, glass fragments, or other foreign objects.

Listen for abnormal noises or vibration during operation.

6. Weekly Inspection

Rotate the wheel manually to check for smooth rotation.

Push/pull the wheel to detect any increase in axial play.

Feel the tread surface for uneven wear patterns such as waviness or one-sided wear.

7. Monthly Inspection

Use a caliper to measure the remaining tread thickness.

When thickness reaches the warning value, increase monitoring frequency. When it reaches the replacement value, replace the wheel promptly.

8. Break-in Period

Newly installed AGV mobile robot PU drive wheel typically requires a break-in period of 8–24 hours. During this time, tread temperature may rise slightly, and a thin, normal wear layer will form on the surface. This is normal and expected.

9. Load and Environmental Control

Avoid overloading: Excessive loads may cause permanent deformation of the wheel hub or delamination of the polyurethane coating.

Avoid harsh surfaces: Minimize operation on surfaces with sharp gravel or extremely rough textures, as these will accelerate tread wear.
