The potential defects in 6" polyurethane wheel during service primarily fall into four categories: tread wear, adhesive layer delamination, deformation and cracking, and operational abnormalities.

1. Abnormal tread wear – Manifests as rapid thinning of the tread surface, uneven wear (severe wear on one side), and the appearance of pits or grooves on the surface.

Common causes: rough ground surfaces or presence of metal debris; prolonged overloading; non-parallel wheel mounting causing dragging and sliding.

2. Polyurethane layer delamination – The polyurethane layer separates from the metal wheel core, presenting as blistering or edge curling. This is one of the most typical failure modes.

Main causes: poor adhesive bonding during manufacturing; internal heat generation under high-speed or heavy-load operation leading to bond failure; use in corrosive environments.

3. Surface cracking and chunking – Cracks appear on the surface; in severe cases, the urethane layer fractures or small pieces peel off.

Primary causes: embrittlement in low-temperature environments; long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation causing aging; excessive impact loads (e.g., striking curbs or steps).

4. Deformation (out-of-roundness / wrinkling) – The contact area flattens under prolonged static heavy loading (out-of-roundness), or surface wrinkling occurs.

Cause: prolonged static heavy loading flattens the contact area or causes surface wrinkling.

5. Operational issues – Rotation sticking, abnormal noise, and slipping leading to inaccurate positioning.

Main causes: bearing damage, lubrication failure, or entanglement with foreign debris; changes in 6" Polyurethane Wheel diameter due to tread wear, or reduced traction.
